Can tragedy be about now our must it always be set on the past?

Just watched an episode of Inspector Gently set in Teeside, 1966. It was proof that British television has nothing to fear from the US. At least if they stick to life indeed of technology, and so long as grown men are not afraid to cry. The episode was proper tragedy, almost classical.
